Social Networking through Meetup.com

Lately when I mention the word “Social Media” to business owners, I get a blank stare. When I mention MySpace, YouTube, Twitter, I’m speaking their language.

I’m a little surprised when I talk to people about Meetup.com that they haven’t heard about that either. Perhaps it has much to do with the generation more than anything else. Younger folks seem to know what I’m talking about while seasoned business professionals are at most times unaware. The best part about Meetup is finding like-minded people who share your particular interest. It’s our commonality which builds a community around that particular topic. So for those who are unaware……..

According to their website Meetup.com:

“Meetup is the world’s largest network of local groups. Meetup makes it easy for anyone to organize a local group or find one of the thousands already meeting up face-to-face. More than 2,000 groups get together in local communities each day, each one with the goal of improving themselves or their communities.

Meetup’s mission is to revitalize local community and help people around the world self-organize. Meetup believes that people can change their personal world, or the whole world, by organizing themselves into groups that are powerful enough to make a difference.”

I had a chance to attend Aaron Ross’s “PebbleStorm” Meetup last night in Beverly Hills. Aaron provided a comfortable atmosphere in which to meet a wide variety of business owners and professionals who were at different stages of business careers and journeys looking to “make money through enjoyment” as opposed to “make money, then enjoy it.” Though still in its infancy, Pebblestorm can still serve as a resource for people to express there ideas about starting a business they are passionate about or an opportunity for people to help other businesses expand.
